Childhood Dreams

Picture this.

You're a 22 year old in New York, feeling pretty smug about being a reasonably functioning adult who makes nutritional dinners and does her laundry (yep, thus far that's all I've discovered about adulting).  Then your roommate, who affectionately calls you Grandma, suggests dressing up as a mermaid for the day and heading to the Mermaid Parade on Coney Island.

I think I agreed before she even finished the word parade.

Cue Tiff and I stocking up on shells, seahorses and all manner of mermaid-esque objects to transform ourselves into our childhood dream... a mermaid (we even made our costume whilst watching the iconic Disney film).

Did I mention that Tiffany has red hair? She basically was Ariel, which lead to a hilarious encounter with Ursula. This woman definitely won best costume in my mind.

Now I appreciate I'm stretching the definition of mermaid pretty thin with my costume, but New York is stretching my budget pretty thin and I figured shells were a step in the right direction. The most important thing, I believe, was that I felt like a mermaid. And I did, all day as I floated around the Blackpool of Brooklyn.

After walking many a mile in nothing more than a swimsuit and seashells we wound up on the beach, sunning ourselves in the salty air. This was Jula's first trip to the seaside, so it was a pretty big deal, and it was amazing to see her delight when she swam in the ocean for the first time.

It turns out some childhood dreams can come true, and where better to make that happen than New York? It's certainly a city for quirkiness, and it gave me a cherished invitation to be a child again.
